The News, Eats & Events Shaping Western New York |
Marty Kretz, owner of MBody Health and Fitness, is turning his dedication to fitness into a cause to fight hunger across Western New York.
On November 23, Kretz will take on the âPavement to Platesâ challenge, walking 100,000 stepsâabout 50 milesâto support FeedMore Western New York.
This crucial nonprofit serves families in Erie, Niagara, Chautauqua, and Cattaraugus counties, offering thousands of meals and vital nutrition.
The push comes as the organization faces soaring demandâa 46% increase in those seeking help since 2021âand steep federal funding cuts that threaten over $3.5 million in food aid.
Kretz has already raised more than $500, urging the community to donate, spread the word, or join him on the walk.
Participants and sponsors will receive special recognition, including T-shirts and other incentives.
Kretzâs journey underscores how even small acts can drive real change and tackle local food insecurity together. Read More... |
Buffaloâs identity as the "City of Good Neighbors" faces a test amid a sharp rise in immigration arrests across Western New York.
Local ICE operations have detained many residents â often individuals without criminal records â reflecting the cityâs complicated position as a border hub.
Policy shifts over three decades, from Presidents Bush to Clinton, have led to aggressive enforcement and persistently high deportation rates.
This has placed significant strain on facilities like Bataviaâs Federal Detention Center, which regularly operates near or beyond capacity.
Overcrowding, solitary confinement, and inconsistent medical care remain key concerns raised by detainees and advocates.
Expanded surveillance â including facial recognition and warrantless stops â has fueled privacy worries throughout Buffaloâs 100-mile border zone.
While local officials remain divided, uncertainty and fear ripple through neighborhoods revitalized by immigrants and refugees, making immigration enforcement an urgent, deeply local concern for Buffalo residents.

Western New York is preparing for an early blast of winter, with cold air and snow set to move in early next week.
Temperatures on Monday are predicted to stay in the low to mid-30s, but wind chills will make it feel even colder.
Rain will arrive Sunday, then quickly turn to a wintry mix by Sunday evening as the cold intensifies.
By Monday morning, snow showers will likely spread across the region, which could slow commutes and create slippery roads.
Most snow in Buffalo will melt on contact due to warmer ground, yet the Southern Tierâs higher elevations could see more significant accumulation.
Rising lake-effect snow chances south of Buffalo are expected Monday and Tuesday, as cold air passes over warm waters of Lake Erie.
Snow totals could reach several inches along the Chautauqua Ridge, while Buffalo may see up to two inches.
Locals are urged to monitor forecasts and drive cautiously during this seasonâs first real snowfall. Read More... |
